Beginning Reader's Bible: A Great First Bible

I just received my copy of The Beginning Reader’s Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishers. It is a Children’s Bible that has been magnificently illustrated by Marijke ten Cate. I have to say this is the best book I have received to review for free by the Booksneeze program. This Bible contains many stories from both the Old and New Testament. I appreciate that it uses actual Biblical text to tell the stories. Please bear in mind that it is from the Children’s translation of the Bible, so it is more easily accessible to the child reader. That is to say that some of the deeper concepts are watered down, but the framework for teaching them is there. At the same time, most pages include a memory verse, scripture teaching principle, or idea of how to learn to follow God. Now, back to the art. The art is great. The pages are not thin. They are durable thick pages that hold full page, full color art. The art brings the stories to life and would definitely capture a child’s attention.

So, the question: would I recommend this book? Absolutely. We were even discussing who the first people would be that we could buy this for. It is a great product and it is at a good price. Go out and get one for a family that you know and love, or get one for your school age child.

Review: Nelson's Biblical Cyclopedic Index

I recently had the opportunity to review Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index. It is a fantastic resource that allows the user to search through subjects as if it were a combination concordance, short dictionary and topical index. If you are going to be studying a concept and need references, this is a great asset. In addition to the wonderful resource it has on finding information it has roughly 300 word studies. These studies delve into various words and their backgrounds, indicating use and history.

This is one of the more difficult items to review simply because it is an informational book. I can't give you the feel of the book. I can mostly comment on its usefulness and its accessibility. If you are working on studying a subject it is a valuable resource. It is easy to search out a topic and find references for it.

On another note, it is useful for finding out the meaning of names in the Bible. This is very interesting to me for several reasons (including looking up possible names for our baby). The Bible packed with interesting names that are often overlooked during teaching. An example is the story of Deborah and Barak: Deborah (honey bee) is not scared to do something that Barak (lightening) is scared to do. The one who has the Lord should not be scared of anything, but the one who is only strength outwardly cannot stand.

I hope you enjoy this resource as much as I have.
